Every year, incoming senior and freshman girls  are invited to participate in Sigma Iota Sigma. Sigma Iota Sigma is a bonding program that promotes friendship and bonding between the grades.

Sigma Iota Sigma has five presidents who run the organization and pair up the freshman and senior sisters. The presidents this year are Vivian Todora ‘23, Megan Magruder ‘23, Caroline Sanders ‘23, Alex Long ‘23, and Georgia Ethridge ‘23.

“I loved being a president and getting to help out with Sigma Iota Sigma because it was so much fun to get to work together with the other presidents,” Todora said.

At the end of July, everyone who wants to participate in Sigma Iota Sigma is sent a packet. In the packet, there are questions about your favorite shows, foods, and other personality information. Once everyone has completed and returned their packets, the presidents will then meet. The presidents try to match the big sis and the little sis by the things they enjoy and have in common. In the packet, there is also a question where you can request someone you specifically want as your sis and the presidents will try to match you with your request.

Once the presidents match all of the seniors and freshmen they will come up with a date to have the “big sis-lil sis”  night. This year the sis night was on August 12.

Todora hosted the event at her house. The first thing that the seniors and freshman do is reveal who their sis is. The presidents decided that they were going to blindfold their sis, and on the front of the blindfold there was a name tag with their sis’s name on it. The freshmen all lined up with their blindfolds on and the seniors ran to go find their sis and take their blindfolds off.

After everyone found their sisters, they went to go take photos at a photo booth the Todoras had set out for them. After all the pictures were done, the seniors had a food fight planned. There was flour, beans, ketchup, sardines, queso, milk, and so many other food items. The senior girls were all dressed in camo and threw the food on the freshmen. After the food fight, the freshman girls were able to wash off and get into a clean pair of clothes. They then went into a blow up boxing ring that had 4 ledges on it for the freshmen to stand. There was a wrecking ball hanging from the top of the blow up that they could push at each other, trying to get the other to fall off.

The seniors and freshmen did many other fun things with their sisters that night, including playing games and getting to know each other better.

“I loved getting to find out who my sis was and getting to spend time with her, ” Adelaide Butler ‘26 said.

Even though “big sis-lil sis” night is only one night of the year, there are other times that the seniors and the freshman will have events. On the night of the Homecoming game, many of the sisters met up to take pictures with their mums. Also in December, Sigma Iota Sigma will have a holiday event for the sisters to attend with their sis. Many of the sisters go to lunch, get their nails done, or go shopping just to spend some time together.

Recently, Julia Clinkscale ‘23 and Cricket West ‘26 attended the Pitbull concert together.

“I loved being able to go to the Pitbull concert with Julia. We had a great time and enjoyed spending time together,” West said.
