FWCD Homecoming week kicked off with games, animals, and dress-up days, all bringing school pride and excitement. The theme this year was “There’s No Place like Homecoming” in honor of “Wicked, Part Two” coming out in November.
It all started on October 14, when the school welcomed the Creature Teacher, who brought with him various interesting animals during announcements. High school students from all grades could see different animals and learn about them.
“It was a great way to start the week,” Collins King ’29 said
On Wednesday, each grade dressed up in their own respective colors. The freshmen wore gray to represent the Kansas greyscale, sophomores wore yellow for the yellow brick road, juniors wore red like Dorothy’s ruby slippers, and seniors wore green, which embodied the Emerald City.
There were popsicles after lunch in Trustees’ Plaza and an obstacle course during announcements, all provided by the Student Council, with the senior boys Diego Hatcher ’26, Jack Wegman ’26, and Canaan Factor ’26 bringing it home vs the juniors.
Thursday was a quiet day for everyone. The freshmen did service learning and gave back to the community by going to the Union Gospel Mission, Presbyterian Night Shelter, and Tarrant Area Food Bank. Sophomores and juniors had to take the PSAT, which was stressful; however, some people felt it was good practice.
“The PSAT was challenging, but I think it will be useful next year,” Sam Jones ’28 said.
The seniors got to go to the ropes course, where they used the zipline and all the other games in the ropes course. It was the first time this group had been on the course since their freshman year, due to inclement weather in the past two years.
“The ropes course was a blast,” Oliver Kelly ’26 said.
Friday was a big day. Everyone wore their Homecoming shirts and pajama pants, which had a football on the leg in honor of the football team’s winning streak, along with the girls wearing their mums. The seniors had a special mum that was white instead of the red and blue other grades received.
An all-school pep rally for the football game began at 2:30 p.m. in the gym, with the ping pong final played between Cooper Paul ’27 and Will Bloemendal ’27. Teachers and student cheerleaders also had a dance-off with Coach Munoz and Martha Wynn Senter ’27, scoring a perfect 30 points from the judges, who were impressed by being the winners of their salsa dancing skills.
That night, the Falcons played Houston Christian High School at Howard Family Field, with the Falcons punching their ticket into SPC. Paul had two passing touchdowns with 325 passing yards, with one going to Bloemendal and one to Factor ‘26. On the ground, Fox Burton ‘26 had one rushing touchdown with Fulton Weaver ‘26 sealing the game with an interception in the endzone to finish the game with a 32-20 win for the Falcons.
The two senior winners for this year’s homecoming court were Factor and Gigi Helling ’26, who were crowned King and Queen, as voted by the student body.
“Homecoming week is certainly the school year’s highlight with everyone coming together,” Nick Jones ’26 said.
