Coffee, Ice Cream, and Biscuits…Oh my!

Who can name a better combination than coffee and ice cream? I’ll wait…

While you think, let me tell you about Dwell Coffee and Biscuits and its sister business, Morgan’s Ice Cream.

After sleeping in on a late start day, I decided that I would try the coffee shop. It was one of my most frustrating yet worthwhile breakfast experiences. At 10 a.m. on a Tuesday, you would think it would be easy to park as everyone should be at work or school. But, no. The compact parking lot was full of cars.

However, the line was short and the cashier was quick. I ordered a 16-ounce hot latte and a “basic biswich.” Biswiches are Dwell’s signature biscuit sandwiches. There are three different kinds: basic, sausage, and bacon. The “basic biswich” consists of a buttermilk biscuit, scrambled egg patty, and cheddar cheese.

Choosing my drink and food was difficult because I wanted to try everything on the menu. Dwell’s expansive drink list caters to every coffee lover’s needs, including people with dairy sensitivity. It also had a variety of pastries.

After ordering, I had trouble finding a table because the seating area was small, but the room felt big because of the high ceilings and natural lighting. Dwell would be an ideal place to study because of the calming music and aroma of deliciousness.

Leaving Dwell proved a challenge because the parking lot was one way and backed up to a main road. First, I tried to leave through the alley, which did not work. Then, I tried to turn around but I was unsuccessful due to the tight parking lot. After multiple tries, I finally found a way with the help of a bystander to safely exit the lot.

Regardless of the parking, I highly recommend Dwell. It is located at 3113 S University Drive. It opens every morning at 7 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday and 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

So naturally, when I heard about Morgan’s Ice Cream, my interest was piqued.

Like its sister business, it is somewhat difficult to park. You can either parallel park or drive to a lot that is a little further away and walk. It is located in “Near Southside” at 321 S Main St.

Not only does Morgan’s have a great quantity of quality flavors, but it also offers different toppings, milkshakes, coffee floats, Dr. Pepper floats, and cold brew from Dwell.

On my first visit, I got a scoop of “mint to be,” a seasonal flavor, on a sugar cone. You know how mint chocolate chip tastes like toothpaste? Well, “mint to be” did not. It was the perfect balance of chocolate chunks and minty freshness. It was also vegan and gluten-free, like a couple of other flavors.

Since I wanted to try more flavors, I went back and got a coffee float with “fudged up brownie.” Although the coffee was bitter, chocolate and brownie bites sweetened the drink, which balanced out the bitterness.

During my third visit, I wanted to try the most outrageous thing I could think of and that was a cookie sandwich. I sandwiched “cookie monster” between a sugar and chocolate chip cookie. Since the sandwich was so big, I had to put it in a cup and eat it with a spoon. The combination of the three was delicious.

While Morgan’s flavors were outstanding, the building itself did not offer much space for customers to sit and eat their dessert. The only place to sit are benches and a couple of them get in the way of people waiting in line.

Morgan’s is very popular in the evening on Fridays, but not so much around 5 p.m. They’re closed on Mondays. From Tuesdays to Thursdays, they are open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Fridays, they open at 4 p.m. and close at 9 p.m. During the weekend, they open at 3 p.m. and close at 9 p.m.
