Midnight Football Madness Takes Fort Worth

It was damp and past midnight, yet Amon G. Carter Stadium was still rocking. Despite 70-75 percent of the crowd no longer in attendance and the scoreboard declaring that the University of Texas was up 20 points on Texas Christian, there was a buzz of electricity in the air. The few fans left that were clad in purple were cheering their hearts out for an outcome that was highly unlikely and one that did not occur: a TCU win. Texas had great success pounding the Frogs with the running game, as they racked up 187 yards rushing, and Texas proved last weekend that they are simply the better team. However, the amount of emotion of the crowd matched that of the Big 12 regular season finale in Fort Worth against Oklahoma, which is incredible considering the game I attended last Saturday and early Sunday morning had almost the same amount of intensity oozing out of the Fort Worth faithful as it did when the team was playing first place Oklahoma in the last regular season game of their 2012 season. Even though the final score ended up Texas 30, TCU 7, there are positives to be drawn for the Frogs. TCU’s pass defense led by senior cornerback, Jason Verrett, improved significantly in the second half, as I watched them intercept Case McCoy passes on back to back drives, and the defense as a whole only gave up 10 second half points, as opposed to the 20 allowed in the first half. Also, the offense may soon get back to relevance as Casey Pachall came back earlier than expected from a broken left arm: Pachall was poised when pressured and was able to calmly stay in the pocket and deliver some smooth passes. Pachall will continue to improve on the offense’s deficiencies in coming weeks.
