Students Have Mixed Reviews on The New “Knives Out: The Glass Onion”

Madeline Mehall and Audra Thomas

Three years after the first “Knives Out” movie came out, Netflix produced the sequel, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, which is as full of drama and suspense as the first movie. Although the storylines and characters are completely different, the movie has gained lots of opinions from viewers and fans of the previous movie.

In early September, Kate Hudson posted a teaser video on her Instagram announcing a new movie in which she plays a significant role. The cast is a group of well-known actors and actresses. Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Madelyn Cline, Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista, and Edward Norton play a group of friends who go on vacation to their friend’s private island when a murder happens. Daniel Craig returns as Detective Benoit Blanc and is trying to solve the mystery. Craig was featured in the first movie and is the only character to appear in both movies.

The movie premiere was on September 10, 2022, at the Toronto International Film Festival. Then, on October 19, they had an additional premiere in Madrid, Spain. The movie was featured in select movie theaters for only one week, November 23-29, before it was released in December on Netflix.

The first movie, “Knives Out,” takes place outside of Boston in a family mansion, where the grandfather’s will is the topic of conversation. Suddenly, the grandfather gets murdered, and Benoit Blanc, a well-known detective steps in to try and solve the mystery. The cast for the first movie was great, with Jamie Lee Curtis, Ana de Armas, and Chris Evans in some of the starring roles.

“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” opens with friends during the pandemic, all handling the situation very differently than each other. One is with her family, one is throwing a party and the others are isolating themselves. They all have known each other for years, and one of their friends sends them all boxes with an invitation to his private island for their yearly trip. They are invited by their very wealthy friend named Miles (Norton) where he says they will solve his own murder that he has planned. Essentially, the movie is one big murder mystery. However, very quickly into the movie, the storyline takes a complete turn that is not expected.

Madeline- I loved the movie because Kate Hudson is one of my favorite actresses, so I love getting to watch movies and shows that she is in. The setting of the movie really takes you away and makes you feel like you are there. The storyline is similar but different from the first movie, but it is definitely more of a luxurious setting compared to the mansion outside of Boston in the first movie. I really liked the movie overall.

Audra- I really enjoyed the movie. I thought the cast was fantastic, and the whole cast played their roles perfectly. I really liked the twists the movie had because they were super unexpected. I was not a fan of the pandemic being included in the movie, and I think the pandemic did not add anything to the storyline. The setting was so pretty, and the island where they are all staying in Greece was different and really almost took you to that location. I think the movie was really good; however, I preferred the first one. It is difficult to compare the two since they are not very similar, but I enjoyed the storyline of the first one just a little bit more.

Quill Co-Editor-in-Chief Jack Mezey ‘23 also watched the movie.

“I thought the Glass Onion was very entertaining, but I preferred the story, setting, and overall feeling I got from the first movie. It was definitely a great movie, although I think it lacked the in-depth storyline that the first movie had.”

Overall, I would definitely recommend that you watch the movie if you are looking for something entertaining and a bit suspenseful to watch.
