The Fort Worth Country Day JV Boys Basketball team has had some ups and downs the past few years, but they had a breakthrough season this year. The team amassed a record of 11-6 and cemented itself as one of the top JV teams in the SPC conference, having one of the best records.
The JV team is led by starters Carrick McPadden ’29, Chase Hatfield ’28, Marcos Zamorano ’29, Beau Haven ’29, and Jack Rodgers ’28.
They currently have a winning record of 11-6. They played well all season, but have faced some tough losses.
Through the wins and losses this year for the JV team, the top scorer on the team is McPadden. He has been praised for his shooting form and has had success shooting from anywhere on the court he wants, putting up shots anywhere on the court like there’s no tomorrow.
McPadden also leads the team in assists.
“Assists are the most important stat for the JV team,” Max Kuperman ‘28 said. “Assists are necessary if the team wants to work together to help each other score against the opponent.”
The head coach is Ryan Thomas, and the assistant coach is Duke Woback. The team has a strict practice schedule that is made up of running, practicing plays, and working on a wide variety of skills like dribbling, shooting, footwork, and strength.
“As a team, we have gotten a lot better,” Rodgers said, “We have done this through all of the practices and the new and improved practice plan with Coach Szabo.” Mike Szabo is the Varsity Basketball Head Coach.
The team has not only had some outstanding scorers but also some players making some big plays on the other side of the ball. Josiah Dawson ‘29 has had some outstanding plays on the defensive side of the ball, as well as big-time plays on offense.
At home, the team was 7-3 with a winning percentage of .700. Winning games at home is important because the team gets what people call “home field advantage.” The Falcons take extra care to defend their “Falcon Nest,” as Rodgers called their home court.
On February 6, 2026, the JV team celebrated their sophomores by hosting “Sophomore Night.” The starters of this game were Kupermann, Sam Jones ‘28, Bennet Klaus ‘28, Jack Piwetz ‘28, and Hatfield – an all-sophomore lineup.
This night was very symbolic because it was a celebration of this year’s oldest players and leaders on the team, mirroring the Varsity team’s Senior Night.
The team overall has had a great and “fun season,” Kupermann said. This will be a sports season for all of them to remember.
