FWCD Varsity Boys Golf succeeded in many ways. The program has transformed over the past few years into one that boasts of competitiveness and cohesiveness. The team demonstrated these strengths by finishing 3rd place in SPC.
Head Coach, Preston Miller, remarked that the first day of the tournament was spent in pouring down rain for more than six hours. While the team tried their hardest, they ended up being farther back than they anticipated; however, the team did not allow this to discourage them.
“Day two, the team refocused and came storming back shooting a school one day record of +6 over five players with all players shooting sub 80s rounds of golf,” Miller said.
Miller also took time to shout out his team captains, Henry Sellers ’27 and Oliver Kelly ’26. Kelly helped to create a team culture that Miller described as being stronger than any they have recently had. Sellers continues to improve each year with his determination. He was able to tie for a low score for the second year in a row.
Sellers believes that the best thing a team captain can do is stay extremely positive, especially with golf being such a mental sport.
“Being a team captain is very special,” Sellers said. “It feels like I am almost a coach of some sort.”
Sellers’ favorite part of the season was how close everyone got. He loved how they were always able to laugh and have a good time both during and outside of practice.
“Almost every evening after golf practice, we would go and have a team dinner,” Sellers said.
Abbott regrets that she was not able to see much of the tournament for the team, but she was frequently checking updates which always excited her.
“I know we have a couple players that are committed to play at the next level, not surprised from the stats I’ve been reading about and I wish them the best in their next chapter,” Abbott said. “It’s really something to be proud of to be a college athlete.”
Overall, the boys golf program at FWCD has a very bright future in front of them. The team continues to grow and improve each year, which greatly shows in the amount of success they have.
“The freshmen and sophomores are strong and will continue to improve, keeping the strength of the program better every season,” Miller said.
