The FWCD Varsity Girls Golf team consisted of seven players this year, making it a smaller year. Head Coach, Sharon Davis ’04, noted that this year was more of a developmental year for the program; however, the team had lots of successful moments as well. Similar to the boys team, the girls had a rough first day at SPC, but they did amazingly better the next day.
“The golf course [at SPC] is always in great condition and plays a little longer than our normal season tournaments,” Davis said, “It is a great way to challenge our girls to see what they are made of.”
The team captains this year were the team’s two seniors, Courtney Comeaux ’26 and Amelia Dickerson ’26. Both girls felt like they helped to bring the team together and set good examples from the first day of practice to the last.
“We have a lot of fun at practices, which just creates a good vibe with the whole team,” Dickerson said. “We’re always having fun and laughing, and we can push each other to be better every day.”
When describing the captains, Davis described both girls as hard-working, motivated, and great leaders. They will both be greatly missed next year, and underclassmen have big shoes to fill.
“[Comeaux] would always encourage and help other teammates when needed,” Davis said. “[Dickerson] is always striving and pushing herself to go to the next mile.”
The team’s biggest strength was their determination and willingness to play. The girls are always wanting to be at practice and improve.
“Golf is a game that you will never master right away or maybe even ever,” Davis said, “But it is a game that you will be able to play for the rest of your life.”
Dickerson added onto that, saying she thought the team’s biggest strength was their positivity. Negativity is easily able to manipulate a person into playing worse.
“I think we always stay really positive which helps the mood of the team,” Dickerson said. “It overall helps us play better.”
Dickerson is also committed to play golf at Trinity College next year. This is a huge step for her which is a testament to her strong work ethic and grit. Davis is extremely proud of her and praised her golfing abilities.
“It’s always an honor to coach these girls,” Davis said. “I never take it for granted.”
The girls golf program will continue to grow throughout the next few years, and it is already evident how much success is in their future.
