The FWCD Varsity Boys Tennis team ended the season placed 5th in SPC. Although it was not the result they hoped for, it does not reflect the team overall. They ended up with a team record of 11-6, showcasing their camaraderie and hard work. Head Coach, Felipe Parra, said that connection was one of their biggest strengths.
“There was always a sense of brotherhood whenever they were all together,” Parra said.
Some standout moments from the season were a match against Episcopal School of Dallas, which lasted over two hours and came down to the final match, or their two matches against TVS, which both resulted in victories.
This year, six out of the seven starters were seniors, making it very personal to both the players and coaches in many ways. Each of them had been together since freshman year, allowing them to really get to know each other. Team Captain, Jack Wegman ’26, described SPC as an amazing, special way to end their tennis journey together.
“It was fun to see them culminate in these last couple of matches,” Wegman said, “to see them show off on the court.”
The team’s biggest strength, to Wegman, was their will to win. Many of their matches came down to the last individual match. When this was the case, the whole team would gather to support that last singles player or doubles pair.
“I think our biggest strength was helping us as a group, pushing our teammates to get the win,” Wegman said.
Aside from Wegman, the other two team captains were Wyeth Smith ’26 and Lucas Rothenberg ’26. Parra recognized each captain for their individual assets that ultimately brought the team together. Smith for being the “Big Brother” of the team and staying positive; Wegman for always being responsible and supportive even when he could not play due to a wrist injury; Rothenberg for being someone who never gives up.
“They all will be dearly missed,” Parra said.
Block also commented on the tennis leadership this year, acknowledging how much of a difference that can make.
“Tennis rode terrific senior leadership to very competitive seasons,” Block said.
Overall, the tennis team created a very sentimental and memorable end to the year for many seniors. They provided excellent leadership, helping to grow success in the program over the years. They are amazing role models that underclassmen should strive to emulate.
